What is Industrial Cable?
Industrial cables are designed to be durable and robust. They often have thicker insulation and more rugged jackets than standard cables, made from materials like PVC, neoprene, or Teflon. These materials are chosen for their ability to resist abrasion, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Some industrial cables are also armored or shielded to protect against physical damage and electromagnetic interference, which can be particularly important in environments with heavy machinery or high levels of electronic noise.
Several types of wires and cables are used in industrial applications
- Power Cables: These cables are used to transmit electrical power. They are typically made with copper or aluminum conductors and are designed to handle high voltage and current. Power cables can be found in manufacturing plants, power generation facilities, and other settings where heavy machinery is used.
- Control Cables: Control cables are used to send signals to control the operation of equipment. They are essential in automated processes and are designed to be flexible and resistant to interference.
- Data and Communication Cable: These are used for data transmission, crucial in today’s digital and interconnected industrial environments. They include Ethernet cables, fiber optic cables, and other specialized cables designed for high-speed data transfer.
- Coaxial Cables: Used in industrial video equipment, antennas, and data communication systems, these cables have a central conductor, an insulating layer, a metallic shield, and an outer cover. They are designed to carry high-frequency electrical signals with low losses.
- Thermocouple Wire: This specialized type of wire is used in temperature measurement. It consists of two different conductors that produce a voltage when exposed to different temperatures, which is then used to calculate the temperature.
- Fiber Optic Cables: In environments where high data bandwidth or immunity to electromagnetic interference is needed, fiber optic cables are used. These cables transmit data as light pulses and are essential in data-intensive industrial applications.
Different Accessories for Wire and Cable
Wire and cable accessories are a necessity for any panel or industrial controls project. They help with safety, efficiency, and reliablity of an electrical system. Not only that, but they make you panel look well organized and pleasing to the eye! There are many different examples of wire and cable accessories, but here are a few that Control Design Supply always keeps available:- Connectors: These allow wires and cables to be linked together. They come in various forms, check out our connectors section for more information!
- Wire Nuts: A type of connector used to twist together multiple wires, particularly in electrical installations, to create secure, insulated connections.
- Cable Ties: Used to bundle or organize cables, preventing tangles and making installations look neat. They're available in various sizes and strengths, including reusable options.
- Cable Clips and Saddles: Used to secure cables along walls or other surfaces. These are great for tidying up installations and preventing wear on cables.
- Heat Shrink Tubing: A protective covering that shrinks when heated, providing insulation and protection against moisture, abrasion, and chemicals. It's often used for sealing connections.
- Cable Glands: These are used to provide a secure and weatherproof seal where cables enter a junction box or an electrical device, helping to prevent dust, water, and other contaminants from entering.
- Cable Strippers and Cutters: These tools are essential for cutting and stripping the insulation from wires and cables to make proper connections.
