Contactors
Control Design Supply has access to contactors with several different manufacturers. We are here to help find exactly the contactor that you are looking for.
How does a contactor work?
When the control circuit applies voltage to the coil of the contactor, the electromagnetic field it generates pulls a set of contacts together, closing the circuit and allowing electricity to flow to the load. When the control circuit removes voltage from the coil, the electromagnetic field dissipates, and springs or mechanical action force the contacts back into their original position, interrupting the current flow.
What are applications for contactors?
- Motor Control: Contactors are widely used to start and stop electric motors in industrial equipment, HVAC systems, and elevators.
- Lighting Control: Used in control circuits for large lighting systems, especially in commercial or street lighting.
- Heaters and HVAC: To switch on or off electric heating elements, air conditioning units, and other heavy-duty electrical equipment.
- Safety Interlocks: Some contactors include built-in safety mechanisms to prevent the simultaneous switching of multiple devices that could create hazardous situations.
What are some different types of contactors?
- AC Contactors: Used for controlling alternating current circuits. These are the most common types of contactors, typically used in industrial motor control.
- DC Contactors: Designed for direct current applications, DC contactors must be built with special considerations due to the nature of DC arcs (which are more difficult to suppress than AC arcs).
- Heavy-Duty and Light-Duty: Heavy-duty contactors are built to handle higher currents and are used in industrial machinery and motor control. Light-duty contactors are used for smaller loads such as lighting or small appliances.
